How it machines

The reference pure copper. Machinability rated 20 against free-cutting brass at 100. Long stringy chips, a rolled burr on every exit edge and a strong tendency to weld to the cutting edge. Half hard H02 cuts noticeably better than annealed. Expect hand deburring to be a real line in the quote.

Watch out. Contains a small amount of oxygen as copper oxide. Heat it in hydrogen and it embrittles, so it is the wrong grade for hydrogen furnace brazing and for ultra high vacuum.

When not to specify it

Do not use it where the part is heated in hydrogen or lives in ultra high vacuum, because its oxygen content embrittles under hydrogen and outgasses. Do not use it for feature heavy turned parts if the conductivity requirement has headroom, because C14500 will cut four times faster.

Above 99.9 percent copper. You specify these when a conductivity, thermal or vacuum number is on the print, and you pay for them in machining time.

  • C10100
    Oxygen free electronic copper    Ultra high vacuum parts, hydrogen brazed assemblies, sinker EDM electrodes, RF and cryogenic components.
  • C10200
    Oxygen free copper    Oxygen free work that does not need the tighter purity control of C10100.
  • C12200
    Phosphorus deoxidized copper, high residual    Tube, pipe and fabricated parts that get brazed or welded. Standard plumbing and refrigeration copper.
