C18700 Leaded copper

C187. Free-machining coppers. High volume screw machine work where free-machining behaviour and conductivity are both needed.

Specification

UNS
C18700
Conductivity
96 percent IACS
Machinability
85 (C36000 = 100)
Specification
ASTM B301 (free-cutting copper rod, bar, wire and shapes)
Usual temper
H04 hard drawn

How it machines

Lead acts as the chip breaker, giving the same free-machining behaviour as C14500 with slightly higher conductivity. Excellent on screw machines and for high volume turned parts.

Watch out. Contains around 1 percent lead. Check RoHS and REACH exposure for your market before specifying it, and expect some buyers to reject it on that basis alone.

Typical parts

  • High volume screw machine parts
  • Electrical connectors
  • Switch components

When not to specify it

Check RoHS and REACH exposure for your market before specifying it. Many buyers reject leaded alloys on policy alone, and it is unsuitable for anything food or potable water related.

Drawing callout

Replace the bracket with the ASTM specification for your product form. The RFQ builder does this for you and adds edge, finish and plating lines.

Other free-machining coppers

A small addition breaks the chip. Around four times the machinability of pure copper for a few points of conductivity, which is the best trade available in this material family.

  • C14500
    Tellurium copper
Turned parts, threaded components, connector bodies, terminals, fittings. Anything feature heavy.
  • C14700
    Sulphur copper
The same job as C14500 where a little more conductivity is wanted.
