C14500 Tellurium copper

TeCu, C145. Free-machining coppers. Turned parts, threaded components, connector bodies, terminals, fittings. Anything feature heavy.

Specification

UNS
C14500
Conductivity
93 percent IACS
Machinability
85 (C36000 = 100)
Specification
ASTM B301 (free-cutting copper rod, bar, wire and shapes)
Usual temper
H04 hard drawn for turned parts

Published typical values for the alloy, not a promise from any shop. Where these numbers come from.

How it machines

The free-machining copper. Tellurium breaks the chip, so turning, drilling and tapping behave more like brass than like pure copper. Machinability rated 85 against C36000 at 100. Threads come out clean, cross holes burr far less and cycle times drop sharply. Usually supplied H04 hard drawn for the best finish.

Watch out. The single largest cost lever in copper machining. Roughly four times the machinability of pure copper for about seven points of conductivity. Not for ultra high vacuum.

Typical parts

  • Connector bodies and terminals
  • Threaded fittings and valve parts
  • Contact pins and sockets
  • Welding tips and nozzles
  • Any turned copper part with features

When not to specify it

Not for ultra high vacuum, where the tellurium is a contaminant. Not where a certified 100 percent IACS is required. Check stock and lead time on unusual sizes, because the supply chain is thinner than C11000.

Drawing callout

Replace the bracket with the ASTM specification for your product form. The RFQ builder does this for you and adds edge, finish and plating lines.

Other free-machining coppers

A small addition breaks the chip. Around four times the machinability of pure copper for a few points of conductivity, which is the best trade available in this material family.

  • C14700
    Sulphur copper
The same job as C14500 where a little more conductivity is wanted.
  • C18700
    Leaded copper
High volume screw machine work where free-machining behaviour and conductivity are both needed.
