C18200 Chromium copper

CuCr, C182. High strength and heat resistant coppers. The general purpose resistance welding electrode material. Also mould inserts and hot stiff parts.

Specification

UNS
C18200
Conductivity
80 percent IACS
Machinability
20 (C36000 = 100)
Specification
Specification depends on product form, confirm with the supplier. RWMA Class 2.
Usual temper
TH04 precipitation hardened and cold worked

Published typical values for the alloy, not a promise from any shop. Where these numbers come from.

How it machines

Machinability rated 20. In the solution treated condition it is gummy like pure copper. Aged, it is harder and abrasive on tooling. The usual routes are machine soft then age, accepting a small dimensional movement, or machine in the hardened temper and accept a slower cycle.

Watch out. Age hardened, so machining before or after heat treatment changes both the cycle time and the final dimensions. Say which dimensions are critical.

Typical parts

  • General purpose resistance welding electrodes
  • Electrode shanks and holders
  • Mould inserts and cooling pins
  • Hot stiff structural parts

When not to specify it

Not for conductivity alone, where C11000 is far better. Never order it without a temper, because the hardness that stops a tip mushrooming only exists after heat treatment.

Drawing callout

Replace the bracket with the ASTM specification for your product form. The RFQ builder does this for you and adds edge, finish and plating lines.

Other high strength and heat resistant coppers

Age hardened alloys chosen for strength, hardness or hot performance. Conductivity drops, sometimes a long way, and none of them machine quickly.

  • C15000
    Zirconium copper
Resistance welding electrodes for aluminum and coated steel, and parts that must stay conductive while hot.
  • C18150
    Chromium zirconium copper
Welding electrodes and holders, high duty contacts, parts that see heat and load together.
  • C17510
    Nickel beryllium copper
Welding electrode holders, high conductivity springs, parts needing strength with moderate conductivity.
  • C17200
    Beryllium copper
Spring contacts, connectors, non-sparking tools, mould inserts, high fatigue components.
