C36000 Free-cutting brass

C360, 360 brass. Brasses, for reference. The reference point for the machinability scale, and the default when conductivity does not matter.

Specification

UNS
C36000
Conductivity
26 percent IACS
Machinability
100 (C36000 = 100)
Specification
ASTM B16 (rod, bar and shapes for screw machines)
Usual temper
H02 half hard

Published typical values for the alloy, not a promise from any shop. Where these numbers come from.

How it machines

The easiest alloy in the family to cut and the reference point for every machinability rating. Short chips, clean threads, excellent finish, high speeds. Every copper grade is rated against this at 100.

Watch out. Leaded. Check RoHS exposure. It conducts about a quarter as well as copper, so it is not a substitute for a conductor.

Typical parts

  • Fittings and valve bodies
  • Screw machine parts
  • Fasteners and inserts
  • Hardware where conductivity is irrelevant

When not to specify it

It conducts about a quarter as well as copper. It is not a substitute for a busbar, a contact or a heat sink. Leaded, so check RoHS exposure.

Drawing callout

Replace the bracket with the ASTM specification for your product form. The RFQ builder does this for you and adds edge, finish and plating lines.

Other brasses, for reference

Not copper, listed so the machinability scale has a fixed point and so the two most commonly confused brasses are not specified by accident.
